Application Procedure

Application Procedure for the IGAP Programme of Preparation

To apply to IGAP Programme of Preparation, you need to submit 5 items before the deadline of 31 March.

  1. The Application Form (available here).
  2. An essay of no more than 3000 words, telling the story of your life and what has brought you to make an application at this time.
  3. Four standard passport photos, each signed with your name on the back.
  4. A letter of support from someone who knows you well and who understands the nature of psychotherapeutic work.
  5. The application fee.

All of these items are explained in more detail on the application form itself.

There is also an Equality,  Diversity and Inclusion Form (available here), which we invite you to submit with your application.

What happens next:
A panel of three IGAP analysts (the Intake Committee) will read your application and come to a decision about whether to take your application further.

If successful, you will be contacted by the Chair of the Intake Committee and given the names of three IGAP analysts, with whom you will need to get in touch in order to arrange an interview. They may ask you to visit them in person or online. Each will ask for at least one meeting, but they are each entitled to ask to see you a second time if they feel it is necessary.

You will also be given the name and contact details of an IAAP analyst who is not an IGAP member. This person will act as your External Examiner, and you will meet once with them.

The three IGAP Members and the External Examiner then report back to the Intake Committee, and a decision is made. You will be notified of IGAP’s decision by the end of June for the September start.

If you are successful in your application, the three IGAP members who have interviewed you will normally become your Review Committee: you will meet with them regularly during your Programme of Preparation, and they will monitor your progress as well as be a source of assistance as required. As far as possible, the same External Examiner will be asked to assess your progress when you feel ready to move to Advanced Candidacy and again when you are ready to move to the final stages of Preparation to become an analyst.

Unsuccessful applicants must normally wait two years to apply again, if they so wish, and may not apply more than twice. Please see the Appeal Guide for Applicants here  if you think you have not been given a fair hearing.

Please note that acceptance on to the Programme of Preparation does not guarantee successful qualification as an IGAP Jungian analyst. There are many reasons why people who begin the Programme of Preparation do not finish; it is in the nature of life for unexpected obstacles to arise.
